Hospital rejuvenates a memorial garden
A tired garden is revived with new plantings, a clearer path, and a “wind phone”—a quiet place where visitors can speak to loved ones who have died
The design centers on a “wind phone,” a tradition that began in Japan. It offers a quiet place to speak to loved ones who have died.
Before: The garden beside the hospital’s emergency department was overgrown, with no way to walk through—only around the edges.
The renewed garden includes a central path and benches for quiet sitting. Visitors can leave memorial pebbles at the base of the wind phone.
The garden and wind phone offer a quiet space for hospital visitors, nurses, doctors, and staff.
Just beyond the garden are large air handlers that serve the adjacent buildings. A new satellite bed with tall shrubs will screen the equipment and reduce noise.
From the client
“David is inspired by his work, easy to talk to, and his interpretation of our vision was right on. We are grateful we were connected to him for this project as he is an exceptional landscape designer!”
